Yes, we realize that the details in the song describe Australia, not New Zealand. That's the whole point.
Funny story though--we practiced this song for YEARS in our basement tracking area. Eventually, we had to have the water heater replaced. A couple of guys came to replace the water heater, and were speaking Ukrainan the whole time they did it. While they were working I stopped in and noticed something lying in the dust on the floor, which had likely been there for 30 years. It was a New Zealand 20¢ piece with a big ol' kiwi bird on the back of it, and it had been sitting there the whole time.
lyrics
The thought came up from time to time
It grew on my brain like a second spine--
To go out west, outback, outside--
Out far, Far East, koala sunrise.
The desert sun and desert sky
Would show me things to blow my mind--
Like leather pants and naugahide
And dingo flavored marmalide.
New Zealand!
My kanga-colored caravan
Was crossing wadis far and wide
A singing sun to light my way--
A dust-cloud pillar from behind
Like standing waves within my head
One like a son of men appeared
And there, behind a mulga stood
To cool my brain and calm my fears.
NEW. ZEALAND.
I sat beneath the mulga tree
And as I sat beneath the sun
Like Krakatoa spewing fort
Port Moresby and aluminum,
The sea had yielded up her dead!
The bony fingers in the sand
Wrapped themselves around my head
And joined my dessicated hand.
New Zealand...

Come for the '70s Dodge pickup on the cover. Stay for Americana/Folk music played like rock-n-roll (a winning formula if there ever was one). THE GHOSTS THAT I RUN WITH is nothing short of AWESOME. Andy Smash & the Rust Belt Hotrods
